Social Work Day 2012 - Social Workers as First Responders to Trauma

This year's topic was “Social Workers as First Responders to Trauma”.  Topics included the neuro-physiological response to trauma, working with families in the military, school tragedy and self-care to avoid vicarious traumatization.  We had over 240 attendees.

The School of Social Work is the recipient of generous support from the Kirk Haney Fund which underwrites all of the expenses for the yearly Social Work Day Conference. Kirk Haney was a student in the School of Social Work completing his senior field placement in child welfare at the time of his death.  Kirk’s parents, Jim and Beth Haney and his brother Dann Haney established the Kirk Haney Fund to provide continuing education through an annual conference. This year’s topic was particularly poignant in memory of Kirk Haney, as he was a first responder with his community’s volunteer fire department.  This experience was instrumental in leading him to the career choice of social work.
