Freshman Year

Welcome to your first year as a social work declared student. The program sequence requires two full academic years (4 semesters). Students are formally admitted into the social work major in the fall semester of their Sophomore year. The program does NOT allow for Spring Semester entry into the sequence.

Requirements

  • All General Education courses must be completed before entering the major sequence in the fall semester (see requirements for the major below for additional prerequisites).
  • A formal application, personal statement, and evaluation of 25 hours of documented paid or volunteer service hours are required for program admission and continuance.

How to enter the program sequence:

  1. Review the major requirements below
  2. Review the course requirements below
  3. Attend the transition meeting. These sessions are held in early Spring Semester. Students on the e-mail list (see note in left column of this page) will be notified of the meeting times and places. Meeting information will also be posted at the Advising Home Page.
  4. Submit an application packet that includes (available September 1, 2010):
    • Completion of an application
    • Submission of a personal statement
    • Submission of verification and evaluation (pdf) of a minimum of 25 approved service hours (paid or volunteer)
  5. See local service hours opportunity (doc) listing. The service hour requirement is designed to provide students with minimal exposure to social services for a feel of what the profession has to offer. Service hours must be completed post high school and within two years of application to the program. The local service hours opportunity list can serve a a guide to appropriate experiences in other communities.

Declared BSW students must apply for continuance into the BSW program sequence in the fall of the sophomore year for entry to the program in the fall of the junior year. Current Illinois State University students wanting to change their major to social work, must apply for formal admissions.
