A Gerontology Concentration is offered by the School of Social Work and the Department of Sociology/Anthropology. It enhances the social work major by integrating a working knowledge of aging issues with the generalist BSW degree.
To achieve this area of special concentration, students must satisfactorily complete all core course work required for the BSW degree in addition to the following:
All requirements for the minor in Gerontology (21 credit hours), including the following courses:
SOC 211: Social Gerontology
PSY 303: Adult Development and Aging or PSY 304: Gerontological Psychology
FCS/HSC 394: Health Aspects of Aging
12 credits of electives approved by the Gerontology Committee that is housed in the Department of Sociology-Anthropology. Recommended elective courses include but are not be limited to:
SOC 210: Sociology of Health and Medicine
SOC 212: Sociology of Death
SOC 311: Issues in Gerontology
COM 331: Human Communication and the Aging Process
FCS 305: Families in Later Life
Successful completion of the social work field practicum during the senior year in a pre-approved agency that focuses on Gerontology
